Transaction Overview

  • On April 17, 2017 Oracle Corp (NYSE:ORCL) announced a definitive agreement to acquire Wercker.
  • Wercker allows software developers to create Docker containers and more quickly build and deploy applications onto various cloud platforms through its opensource CLI, SaaS platform, and APIs
  • Wercker was founded in the Netherlands in 2012, and has raised $7.5m in total funding to date.
  • This marks Oracle’s third acquisition to date in 2017.
    • Apiary acquired in January
    • Webtrends Infinity assets in March

Oracle’s Shift Towards the Cloud and its Affect on the Mid-Market

  • Since the release of Database 12c in September 2016, Oracle has been aggressively acquiring cloud technologies that align with its strategy to develop an IaaS and PaaS cloud computing platform to rival AWS.
  • Both the acquisitions, Apiary and Wercker, were of start-up capabilities targeted towards the developer community, allowing coders to accelerate development efforts. This is likely to increase the adoption of the Oracle platform from enterprises and consumer application developers alike.
  • Oracle’s core focus, of shifting towards the cloud has a significant impact on mid-market enterprise software and service companies operating under its ecosystem. If adoption of Oracle’s platform one day rivals that of AWS’s, and IaaS/PaaS can reliably maintain large enterprise systems, then on-premise providers will need to quickly rethink their business model. Companies that are not well-positioned for this transition will have a difficult time reacting to the changes.
